O. “Fritz” Schwarz, Chief Counsel of the Brennan Center for Justice, discusses his most recent book, “Democracy in the Dark: The Seduction of Government Secrecy” in which he documents government secrecy from the founding fathers through current times. The key, he writes, is the balance of democracy vs. secrecy — for example, over 100 million new government documents are classified as “secret” each year, many unnecessarily, just to gain the attention of officials to read them.
