On July 30th, Dr. John Odom, and Will Green, both board members at the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute, joined the Tuesday 8 O’Clock Buzz with our host Aaron Perry. Will Green was asked to join the board by Dr. Odom because of his passion for African-American youth and families. Dr. John Odom became involved because of his passion for stimulating the local economy, and has written the book “Saving Black America: Economic Civil Rights”. When they collaborated, they came up with a fairly simple solution to black poverty: educate the youth on business and financial literacy. Hence, the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute was founded.
The center is located at 149 East Wilson Street Madison, WI 53705. The institute has programs for people of all ages from Pre-K/Kindergarten to Middle/High school to parents. The Pre-K/ Kindergarten has a program called Summer Training for At-Risk Students (STARS) which was started by Dr. Odom’s wife 24 years ago. The parents of the STARS program children are required to take a parenting skills class. The program for the Middle and High school children is called, Youth Empowerment Academy (YEA) and its goal is to create economic readiness.
Dr. Odom explained the importance of business creation in black communities. In his words,”In some communities a dollar circulates for 20 days, but in the black community a dollar circulates for 6 hours.”
The 1st Annual Awards Luncheon to celebrate the achievements of YEA will be held at the concourse hotel on August 13th from 11:30-1:30 with Judge Greg Mathis as the keynote speaker.
