On today’s episode, Allen sits down with cartoonist Nick Thorkelson and editor Paul Buhle to talk about their new volume on radical philosopher Herbert Marcuse, whose ideas inspired the New Left of the 1960s and, according to Angela Davis, can be just as valuable today.
Nick Thorkelson is a cartoonist living in Boston. He is the co-author and/or illustrator of numerous volumes including The Underhanded History of the USA (New England Free Press, 1974), The Legal Rights of Union Stewards (Labor Notes, 2017; 6th ed.), and Herbert Marcuse, Philosopher of Utopia: A Graphic Biography (City Lights Books, 2019).
Paul Buhle is founder of the journal Radical America and the archive Oral History of the American Left. He is co-editor of the Encyclopedia of the American Left and the author or editor of dozens of books, including A People’s History of American Empire (Metropolitan Books, 2008), the 50th-anniversary edition of Radical America Komiks (PM Press, 2019), and Herbert Marcuse, Philosopher of Utopia: A Graphic Biography (City Lights Books, 2019).
