Thursday, October 20th, is the anniversary of the 1877 publication
of a drawing of starving Indians printed in the Illustrated London News, one of the most popular journals of the Victorian period with a weekly circulation of three hundred thousand in 1863. During 1876-1878, starvation claimed between five and a half to nine and a half million Indians or more.
