March 30th is the anniversary of the day in 1918 when Chicago stockyard workers won the eight hour work day. Victory was won by determined effort, but there were unique conditions, including wartime labor shortages, the backing of the Chicago Federation of Labor (CFL), the help of great radical organizers, black-white racial unity, and Federal government intervention.
