Right now, the corner of Knickerbocker St. and Monroe St. in Madison houses the Town & Country gas station. In the near future, it could be the home of a 3-1/2 story, 21 unit apartment building with garage and commercial space.
On July 25, David Maraniss and Amanda Maraniss joined host Tony Castaneda on the 8 O’Clock Buzz to discuss neighborhood reaction to this proposal.
The Maranisses first heard about the plan to build this complex in April. At that time they were told that it would be built and there was nothing they could do about it, because it met the standards of all state laws and codes. This was false, however, as the building goes over the zoning codes stated in the Monroe Street Commercial District Plan.
Monroe Street been development quite a bit in the past few years, so why not continue it? Maraniss explains, “This city has a delicate balance between residential areas and commercial enterprises and there is a sense that this latest push for in-field in-density is an urban planning concept. It has to follow this delicate balance of the city. There is a sense that all throughout the city that its being tipped.”
A contrary view is presented by Ald. Sue Ellingson, who backs the proposal because of the business development would bring.
