The Raging Grannies Of The Madison Area
The Raging Grannies have been called “the moral conscience of Madison”. Since 2003, this group of “women of a certain age” have been raging – nonviolently – for peace, justice, and progressive causes in general.
Dressing in aprons, shawls, and outrageous hats, and usually lavishly decorated with colorful political buttons, the Grannies riff on the stereotype of the “sweet little old lady” in order to deliver their strong opinions and sassy song lyrics. Their songs address a wide scope of issues – peace and war; equality and social justice; civil and human rights; racial discrimination; gun safety; climate change and the environment; poverty and homelessness; gender identity; labor rights; and health care, just to name a few. “Wherever there’s inequity it meets with our dismay,” says one song, continuing, “And we stand with you today!”
The Grannies sing indoors and out — on streetcorners, at rallies, in convention halls — anywhere they’re invited, and some places where they’re not. (How else to try to change hearts and minds?) They never, EVER charge for their appearances!
A favorite warm-weather gig is the Dane County Farmers’ Market on the Capitol Square. Look for the Grannies about every other week at the corner of West Main and South Carroll Streets. Singing starts at 10 AM.
The Madison-area Raging Grannies are part of an “international dis-organization”. Gaggles of Grannies exist in all the provinces of Canada; about 30 US states; and in a few countries on other continents. There is no central leadership or hierarchy, and they intend to keep it that way!
