Today in 1971: Fifteen members of Vietnam Veterans Against the War take over the Statue of Liberty and barricade themselves inside for 42 hours.
Calling themselves Operation Peace-on-Earth, they fly the U.S. flag upside-down from the statue’s torch and issue statements regarding their war for all those oppressed in the United States.
Under a federal judge’s orders, they will leave the statue on December 28th. They clean up their trash and put five dollars in an envelope in the lunchroom to pay for the coffee and sugar they used.
