Today in 1937: 1000 striking steel workers and members of their families, on their way to picket at the Republic Steel plant in south Chicago where they were organizing a union, are stopped by the Chicago Police.
In what became known as the “Memorial Day Massacre,” police shot and killed 10 fleeing workers, wounded 30 more, and beat 55 so badly they required hospitalization.
