Today in 1884: Eleanor Roosevelt is born. The most influential woman of her time, Roosevelt will anger elites with her newspaper column, lectures and support for human rights. Despite her marriage to the president, she will have a long and intimate love affair with journalist, Lorene Hicock.
True to the patriarchal values that women are judged first based on their appearance and almost every article about Roosevelt in the mainstream press will refer to her famous “ugliness.”
