MADISON (WORT) — The family of 19-year-old Tony Robinson has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the City of Madison and Madison Police Officer Matt Kenny.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages for the fatal police shooting of the unarmed teen during an incident this March at an apartment on Madison’s east side.
In May, Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne deemed Kenny’s use of deadly force justified and cleared the veteran officer of all wrongdoing.
The new lawsuit comes in the wake of a $2.3 million settlement reached between the family of Paul Heenan and the City of Madison. In 2012, Heenan was shot to death by Madison Police officer Stephen Heimsness just blocks away from where Robinson was killed. Heimsness’ use of deadly force was also ruled legal by Ozanne.
At a press conference Wednesday, Tony Robinson’s mother Andrea Irwin says the civil lawsuit is the family’s last opportunity for justice. WORT’s Craig McComb was there.
