Kurdish People in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq have been celebrating Donald Trump’s election to the U.S. presidency by naming businesses and children after Trump.
Their delight in the Trump victory is said to be in response to Trump’s support for Kurds, as expressed by Trump Middle East policy adviser Walid Phares in statements he made in June.
Phares said Trump is a friend of the Kurdish people who would not object to secession of the Kurdistan Region from Iraq and its independence.
Kurdish political analyst Mahamad Zangana told Al-Monitor that the Kurdish people are confident that the United States under Trump will treat them more favorably than during Barack Obama’s presidency.
By all accounts, Kurdish citizens take Trump statements seriously and see Trump as the man who will make their independence dream come true.
