Today in 2000: Vermont’s civil unions law goes into effect, granting gay couples most of the rights, benefits, protections and responsibilities of marriage under state law.
In the first five years, over one thousand Vermont couples, and over six thousand from elsewhere, had chosen a Vermont civil union.

The Nehemiah Center for Justice and Reconciliation is hosting a free, interactive, three-part workshop series this summer, designed to educate the general public on mass incarceration and the criminal justice system in general. Tonight’s session is “The Prison System: Purpose and Programming,” with an overview of the Wisconsin prison system, it’s purpose, and what an inmate might experience.
