Today in 1956: students in Budapest, Hungary, begin demonstrating for a relaxation of the nation’s Communist regime. They demand that former Premier Imre Nagy head a new government.
The government rebuffs the students and street violence breaks out. Communist Party First Secretary Erno Gero will appeal to the Soviet Union for help, and tanks will swarm into the city. Order will not be restored until November fourth.
