Historian, public intellectual, activist, and friend of the show Tyler Stovall passed away suddenly on December 10, 2021.
Today, we remember him by re-airing this interview he did with Thursday host Allen Ruff earlier this year on January 28, 2021, shortly after the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
They discuss Stovall’s latest book, White Freedom: The Racial History of an Idea, which traces the role of race, racism, and white identity in Western notions of “freedom” and the history of liberal democracy.
Tyler Stovall was a professor of history at Fordham University and dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Fordham University.
Among his many contributions to his field, he was the author of numerous publications including Transnational France: The Modern History of a Universal Nation (Routledge, 2015), Paris and the Spirit of 1919: Consumer Struggles, Transnationalism, and Revolution (Cambridge University Press, 2012), and White Freedom: The Racial History of an Idea (Princeton University Press, 2021).
