Formerly known as the “Day of Unity,” the idea behind Domestic Violence Awareness Month was first conceived in October 1981 to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence to women and their children. We are meant to mourn those who have fallen victim to the violence, celebrate those who have survived, bring together leaders who want to put an end to the cycle. Here in Dane County, local organizers are working to do just that, specifically for the Latinx migrant and immigrant populations, whose experiences can go unnoticed in the community. Manuel Cerda, Community Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator at UNIDOS and Michael Ward, a local artist whose work will be present at the Healing Art Canvas Gallery spoke with Monday Buzz host Brian Standing on October 8, 2018.
