Today in 1958: A B-47 bomber from Hunter Air Force Base in Savannah, Georgia, collides in mid-air with an F-86 aircraft. It is on a simulated combat mission with a hydrogen bomb on board.
The B-47 attempts to land three times but cannot reduce its speed. To avoid exposing the base to an explosion, the nuclear weapon is jettisoned into the ocean several miles from the mouth of the Savannah River. The weapon will never be recovered.
