Today in 1961: Herbert Lee is shot in Liberty, Mississippi, by E.H. Hurst, the area’s state representative.
Lee has been driving cars for voting-rights activists. Hurst will tell police he shot Lee in self-defense.
Louis Allen, a black logger who witnessed the shooting, backs Hurst’s story. When Allen admits he lied to protect his family, he dies from three shotgun blasts to his head. No one will ever be charged for the murder.
