As expected, Governor Scott Walker’s executive budget released last Tuesday included sweeping changes to the University of Wisconsin system, including greater autonomy for the University Regents and the largest single cut — 300 million dollars, or 13% — in the University’s 167-year history. To add insult to injury, the Governor also proposed — then apparently backed away from — changes to the University’s mission statement, known as the Wisconsin idea.
