(WORT)–The University of Wisconsin-Madison announced last week that it had just won a major grant to preserve historic recordings of Wisconsin’s folk music. The National Endowment for the Humanities will award $230,000 to the Mills Music Library and the Center for the Study of Upper Midwest Culture to digitize brittle and underused recordings stretching back to the early 20th century. Represented in the collection are over 25 cultural traditions from Swedish and Croatian to Native American music. Darien Lamen reports.
