Jim Murphy, a devout Catholic and anti-nuclear pacifist from Highland, Wisconsin was arrested and released today at the Offut US Air Base just outside Omaha, Nebraska. He illegally entered the air base to deliver a letter to the Commander. The letter called attention to this week’s 73rd anniversary of the nuclear weapons attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The planes that dropped the bombs, The Enola Gay and Bokscar, were built on the Offutt base.
The Offutt base is the headquarters for the Stratcom reserve unit that plays a key role in deterring strategic attacks against the U.S. The unit is considered a steward of the nation’s strategic nuclear capabilities.
WORT Reporter Gil Halsted talked to Murphy right after he was released from custody.
