On today’s show, Patty Peltekos looks at the occupation with the highest suicide rate: farmers and agricultural workers. Amidst belt-tightening for all farmers, the landscape of depressed milk prices and an oversupply of milk means that dairy farmers are particularly suffering from economic woes, with western Wisconsin having the nation’s highest rate of farm bankruptcies in 2017. The problem has not gone unnoticed by the industry, or by the media. Today we take a look at what is being done to help farmers’ quality of life and behavioral health in Wisconsin.
Our guests are Roger Williams, volunteer mediator with Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) and UW-Extension Professor Emeritus; Hayley Jordan, Family Living Educator at UW-Extension; Lori Wick, Youth Educator at Lafayette County 4H; and Bridget Mouchon-Humphrey, Program Director at Southwest Wisconsin Community Action Program.
